Jefferies Controllers Summer Internship Program - New York and Jersey City

Following an enriching orientation program, Interns will begin working on day-to-day responsibilities, supported by colleagues who serve as instructors and mentors throughout the internship. Formal performance reviews are provided to maximize the experience.
Interns are challenged to think creatively, offer input, and add value to the team from day one through projects incorporating research, analysis, and recommendations. What We Look For In A Candidate
We seek candidates eager to make a real, hands-on impact on our clients and able to multitask while managing various projects simultaneously. Successful Jefferies Interns must demonstrate professionalism and relationship management skills, coupled with strong technical, written, and verbal communication abilities.
The work is fast-paced, challenging, and intellectually stimulating. Essential traits include the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, adaptability, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
Candidates should possess a strong academic background and be pursuing a four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent program. While a background in accounting or finance is helpful, we hire interns from diverse disciplines.
Desired Background and Skills

Work With Us – Opportunities in Controllers
The Jefferies Controllers Internship offers candidates hands-on experience familiarizing them with the finance and accounting activities at Jefferies. Controllers are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the firm’s financial records, regulatory filings, and internal management reports.
Interns will be placed in one of the following Controller teams:
- Balance Sheet, Legal Entity, & Corporate Control
- Business Unit Control
- Regulatory Reporting
- Valuations
- Accounting Policy & External Reporting
- Financial Planning & Analysis
Additionally, you will have consistent interaction with various operational groups, Finance, Risk, Compliance, and business management teams.
Controllers Group Descriptions
BALANCE SHEET, LEGAL ENTITY & CORPORATE CONTROLLERS
This team establishes and maintains comprehensive controls over the Firm’s balance sheet and various legal entities. Responsibilities include establishing and monitoring substantiation policies, managing balance sheet and legal entity analyses and reporting, developing controls across all legal entities to ensure bylaws compliance, and compiling required financial statements. The Corporate Controllers team also holds ultimate responsibility for the firm’s books and records, including Accounts Payable and Fixed Assets.
BUSINESS UNIT CONTROLLERS
Aligned by division/product, Business Unit Controllers serve as the main link between the Front Office and Finance. Their main duties involve recording, analyzing, reconciling, and explaining all financial data related to trading activities for their supported business units (Equities, Fixed Income, Asset Management, Commodities, and Investment Banking).
FINANCIAL PLANNING & ANALYSIS
FP&A prepares weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual management reports comparing actual results to forecasts, primarily for the CFO. This team is also responsible for the firm's budgeting and forecasting activities, producing profitability reports, and generating ad-hoc reports to analyze business health.
REGULATORY CONTROLLERS
This team is responsible for preparing and filing reports required by US regulatory authorities (primarily the SEC and FINRA) and proactively managing the firm's regulatory capital usage. Regulatory Controllers ensure compliance with rules regarding customer asset protection. They analyze financial and operational information before regulatory submission, respond to regulator inquiries, and interact with regulators during examinations. Additionally, they advise management on the regulatory impact of new products and system implementations, requiring constant monitoring of regulatory developments.
VALUATION CONTROLLERS
Valuation Controllers manage the independent price verification process (IPV)—providing an independent valuation opinion of the firm's inventory according to the fair value policy. This process is implemented jointly with Risk Management and Accounting Policy.
ACCOUNTING POLICY & EXTERNAL REPORTING
This group establishes the firm's accounting policies and ensures the correct application of accounting principles within Jefferies' financial statements, including external SEC filings. The Accounting Policy Group offers technical accounting advice on complex business transactions to management and the Audit Committee, while monitoring industry developments for timely implementation of new accounting standards. The External Reporting Group prepares and files the firm's financial statements with the SEC and oversees financial reporting for Jefferies Group subsidiaries.
COMPENSATION CONTROLLERS
This team is jointly responsible for analyzing, forecasting, and recording Jefferies' compensation programs, including production-based agreements, contractual guarantees, and discretionary compensation. They manage the end-of-year compensation process.
EXPENSE CONTROLLERS
The Expense Controllers team ensures proper expense controls are in place, producing timely and detailed expense analyses across all firm areas (including for the Expense Management Committee). They oversee the expense allocation process and implement/coordinate firm-wide expense budgeting and forecasting activities, participating in global Expense Savings initiatives.
