Internship Period

11 January 2027 – 30 June 2027

Job Description

This role provides an opportunity to experience MUFG Global Markets Research for the Asia region. You will gain an understanding of the fundamental and macro drivers underpinning FX and rates markets, with a specific focus on Asia and global macro. You will also learn how the research function adds value to MUFG’s client relationships through thought leadership and insights, and how to communicate and amplify those findings through a variety of channels.

You will be involved in a range of tasks to help the GMR Asia team accomplish its goals:

  • Create and analyse regional and country databases on the key drivers of Asia’s economies and FX and rates markets, with the ultimate aim to forecast macro and markets.
  • Help develop models and frameworks on Asia’s macro and markets; test hypotheses in a logical fashion. A clear thought process and reasoning are most crucial. Basic arithmetic and statistics are important, and an understanding of econometrics and regression analysis will be helpful. Understanding code (including with the help of GenAI) is also helpful.
  • Support day-to-day activities, including uploading and formatting research reports to the research portal, and maintaining and updating existing databases to ensure they remain fit for purpose on a daily basis.
  • Update and create slide packs and help with logistics ahead of client meetings.
  • Assist with other tasks, including responding to ad-hoc requests.
  • Help automate research processes to improve the team’s efficiency and productivity, including through GenAI, macros, spreadsheets, and code.
  • Work on longer-term thematic research reports by synthesising findings from academic research and think tanks, staying on top of topics and key policy debates, and building a comprehensive understanding of the research topic at hand.

Job Requirements

  • Undergraduate students from Business/Finance/Economics are preferred, but current university students may be considered.
  • Strong interest in global and Asia macro and markets, and a desire to understand markets from a research/economist/strategist perspective.
  • Clear thought process and logical reasoning.
  • Comfort with numbers, arithmetic, and statistics; understanding of econometrics and regression analysis is helpful.
  • A “can do” attitude.
  • Ability to learn on the job and pick up concepts quickly.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and pro-activeness.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of and experience in coding.
  • Experience in using GenAI and willingness to use GenAI to augment existing processes, improve productivity, and improve insights.
  • Organisational skills.
