Following an enriching orientation program, interns begin working on day-to-day responsibilities with support from colleagues serving as instructors and mentors throughout the internship program.

Interns receive formal performance reviews. In addition to projects incorporating research, analysis, and recommendations, interns are challenged to think creatively, offer their input, and add value to the team from day one.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a strong academic background and be pursuing a Master’s degree or equivalent program.

Desired Background and Skills

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Financial Engineering, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field
  • Anticipated graduation between December 2027 and June 2028
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, databases, system implementation, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of financial markets
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to convey complex information clearly
  • Ability to multitask, manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and perform under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Team player who excels at working independently and as part of a team

Opportunities with Risk Management

The Jefferies Risk Management Department is responsible for independent risk oversight and analysis for the firm by identifying, assessing, monitoring, and managing risk. Main responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and implementing the risk management framework, policies and procedures, and controls
  • Establishing and implementing the firmwide risk appetite framework and statements aligned with the firm’s strategic business and financial plans
  • Identifying and assessing financial and non-financial risks, including existing risks from business activities, emerging risks from changes in external conditions, and risks from new business strategies, initiatives, and products introduced through the New Business Process
  • Measuring current and potential risks using quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and monitoring risks through key risk metrics
  • Establishing limit frameworks, monitoring limit utilization against key risk metrics, and ensuring compliance with limits
  • Reporting risk exposures, limit utilizations of key risk metrics, and escalating risk concerns and limit breaches
  • Performing independent reviews and challenges of risk-taking and hedging activities, including deep dives of risk exposures and vulnerability reviews
  • Keeping abreast of regulatory developments and requirements

Intern Responsibilities (Market Risk and Quantitative Analytics)

Interns will be involved in market risk or quantitative analytics groups. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Market Risk

  • Establishing and implementing the market risk management framework, policies and procedures, and controls
  • Partnering with Business to review business strategy and set market risk appetite and limits accordingly
  • Escalating risk concerns and limit breaches
  • Identifying market risks from business activities and ensuring they are adequately measured and assessed in risk metrics and methodologies
  • Performing independent reviews and challenges of risk-taking and hedging activities, including deep dives and vulnerability reviews

Quantitative Analytics

  • Responsible for risk measurement methodologies and implementation, model validation, and the selection, development, and implementation of risk systems and processes
  • Supporting both market and credit risk to ensure the firm’s methodology for assessing firm and client risk is consistent, and working across areas of the firm to ensure methodology alignment with the risk group
  • Independently reviewing and validating all models used for valuation of the firm’s inventory, ensuring model limitations are well understood and appropriately accounted for
