D. E. Shaw's internships page and Rotational Associates Program page describe two recurring early-career routes:

• Summer internship: 10 to 12 weeks, from early June to mid-August, based mainly in New York with positions in London. Tracks include quantitative analyst, software developer (each with a separate Ph.D. intern version) and systems engineering. Students from any field of study can apply, and applicants are usually approaching their final year.
• Rotational Associates Program: a 12-month New York program for graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher in any field, rotating through three departments, with no previous finance experience required.

The tracks are posted separately and the firm's candidate FAQ says an applicant may apply for more than one position, so a candidate with both research and engineering strengths can run several of this firm's routes in one season.

USCIS's published H-1B employer data records initial H-1B approvals for D. E. Shaw & Co. in fiscal years 2021 and 2022, which shows the firm has sponsored H-1B workers in the United States. For a candidate who needs a visa, the stated policy means the firm is not ruled out up front; because the FAQ says nothing about specific offices or short internships, that is a question for the first recruiter conversation.

The firm's own pages and independent coverage support four distinguishing features:

• Finance experience is not required. The interviewing guide says "You don't need prior finance knowledge or experience to be a great candidate", and its head of recruiting told Business Insider in 2024, in a piece republished by Entrepreneur, "We are looking for traits and attributes more than one particular skill".
• A computational-finance origin: the firm was founded in 1988 by David E. Shaw, a former Columbia University computer science professor (Wikipedia), and describes its systematic strategies as built over "more than 35 years of research and trading" on its internships page.
• Separate Ph.D. intern tracks for quantitative analysts and software developers, alongside the standard internships.
• A 12-month Rotational Associates Program that moves each hire through three departments and accepts any bachelor's degree.

For a candidate whose degree is outside finance, the firm's own guidance that prior finance experience is not required is the main reason to spend one of a limited number of applications here; those further along, with a doctorate or a first degree completed, can weigh the Ph.D. intern or rotational routes instead of the standard internship.
