As a Software Development Engineer (SDE) intern, you will use modern technology to solve complex problems and contribute to meaningful projects with global impact. You will create products, features, and services while managing ambiguity in an environment where development cycles are measured in weeks rather than years.

Amazon promotes ownership at every level. As an SDE intern, you will own the entire lifecycle of your code, from design and deployment through ongoing operations. You will be supported by a culture of learning and mentorship as you develop into a high-impact engineer.

Amazon internships across all seasons are full-time positions. Interns should expect to work in an office from Monday through Friday, typically up to 40 hours per week between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Specific team expectations will be communicated by your manager. Interns should not have conflicts such as classes or other employment during the Amazon workday. Applicants must have at least one quarter, semester, or trimester remaining in their studies after the internship concludes.

Key Job Responsibilities

• Collaborate and communicate effectively with experienced, cross-disciplinary Amazonians to design, build, and operate innovative products and services.
• Participate in technical discussions and help drive solutions forward.
• Break down complex and ambiguous problems into well-defined, solvable components before implementation.
• Contribute to the design and development of scalable, reliable services, with distributed-systems scope varying by team.
• Participate in code reviews by providing constructive feedback and validating correctness.
• Contribute to clear and accurate technical documentation.
• Use generative AI and AI-powered tools to enhance development productivity while critically validating, verifying, and integrating AI-generated code.
• Exercise sound judgment when evaluating AI-generated output.
• Write clean, maintainable code according to best practices and design patterns.
• Work in an agile environment using continuous integration and continuous delivery principles.
• Participate in operational responsibilities, including on-call duties.
• Demonstrate operational excellence through monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving production issues.

Basic Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field at the time of application.
• Knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design, operating systems, algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis.
• Experience with at least one general-purpose programming language, such as Java, Python, C++, C#, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience from a technical internship.
• Experience with distributed or multi-tiered systems, algorithms, and relational databases.
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS; SQL and NoSQL database systems; AI tools for development productivity; open-source projects; and/or version control systems.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools in academic or professional settings.
• Ability to clearly articulate technical challenges and solutions.
• Ability to handle ambiguous or undefined problems and think abstractly.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
