About the Internship

Morgan Stanley’s Business Control Unit manages comprehensive risk for the equity business, including non-market risk, regulatory compliance, counterparty risk, client documentation, and governance. The unit advises internal and external clients on risk optimization and ensures operational resilience and efficiency across the department. The Internship Programs begin with a one-day orientation to introduce interns to the Firm, its core businesses, and fellow interns through a firmwide networking event. Interns then participate in division-specific training designed to build the core skills required for a successful internship experience. The program features a Senior Management Speaker Series, desk teach-ins, cross-divisional networking opportunities, community service events, performance reviews, and a robust mentorship program.

Role and Responsibilities

Non-Market Risk Team

This role covers Non-Market risk elements of the business, including operational, franchise, and regulatory risk. The candidate will work with sales and trading personnel and internal stakeholders to ensure the business is prosecuted in a well-controlled manner consistent with the Firm’s risk appetite.

  • Own operational risk monitoring and remediation processes across the business lifecycle and front-to-back processes, actively identifying and remediating operational risks.
  • Manage risk reporting and escalation.
  • Engage with IED personnel on ad hoc queries.

Counterparty Risk Team

The Counterparty Risk team supports how the Firm manages trading relationships with clients, focusing on understanding client profiles, tracking exposures, and maintaining governance around client activity. Based within the Business Control Unit, the team works closely with Sales and Trading and partner functions to ensure client interactions align with internal standards.

  • Assist in analyzing client activity and exposure patterns across products.
  • Support onboarding processes by coordinating documentation and engaging with internal teams.
  • Prepare materials that provide insight into client-related developments.
  • Collaborate with Sales & Trading, Risk, and Operations on day-to-day matters.
  • Track the status of client reviews, approvals, and follow-ups.
  • Support ad hoc requests and ongoing team initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

You are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, with a graduation date between October 2027 and July 2028. A strong interest in finance and financial markets is required. The ideal candidate is analytical and adaptable, a strong multi-tasker, a collaborative team player with a strong work ethic, and possesses strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Confidence and the ability to be a self-starter are essential.

Internship Period

Industrial Placement Program: 6 months between January and July 2027.
