What sets The Voleon Group apart
The Voleon Group was co-founded in 2007 by Michael Kharitonov (Ph.D., Computer Science, Stanford) and Jon McAuliffe (Ph.D., Statistics, UC Berkeley, where he still holds an adjunct professorship).
In December 2019, Bloomberg named both co-founders to its list of the year's 50 people who changed global business, citing the firm's early, exclusive bet on machine learning for trading. Several research and technology leads below them, including the current Chief Technology Officer and Chief of Technical Staff, hold PhDs from Princeton and Carnegie Mellon respectively. The hiring bar here runs through research output rather than trading pedigree: a doctoral background or publication record in statistics, machine learning, or computer science carries more weight than a conventional finance resume, narrowing the realistic applicant pool to candidates who can show that kind of academic work.
