The Explorer/Expert split is one of Barclays' specific structural choices: a candidate decides early whether they want rotational breadth or a single-function specialist track, which materially changes the application target rather than just the team name.

For UK programmes, candidates "who do not have a current right to work in the UK, or who will require visa sponsorship from Barclays are not precluded from applying to internship and graduate opportunities," though right-to-work status may be considered against candidate availability. For Americas and Asia Pacific internships, candidates must already hold the legal right to work in the assigned location; for full-time roles requiring a permit, Barclays applies on the candidate's behalf, with the firm noting that "the granting of work permits is beyond Barclays' control and subject to local immigration laws." This is a regional gate: an international candidate without US or APAC work rights effectively narrows the realistic targets at Barclays to UK programmes, which is worth reading before choosing a geo to apply into.

First, the Graduate Programme bifurcates into Explorer (two-year rotational, broad) and Expert (specialist, role-specific) tracks – a structural choice that most peer banks do not publish, and that pushes a candidate to decide breadth vs depth before applying rather than after joining. Second, Barclays is the only UK-headquartered bulge-bracket: candidates targeting a UK-based franchise with a global Investment Bank and Markets business get a comparable platform without the US-firm parent structure, and the firm maintains hiring scale outside London at named UK campuses (Glasgow, Northampton, Radbroke). Third, the Discovery Programme is positioned for students roughly two years from graduation, earlier than most peer insight programmes, and the firm states it feeds the subsequent internship intake.
