Windows Engineer (Summer Internship)

Our goal is to provide an unparalleled educational experience while giving you a real sense of what it's like to work at Jane Street full time. As an intern, you will be paired with full-time employees who act as mentors, collaborating with you on real-world projects that are critical to our operations.

As a Windows Engineering Intern, you will work alongside full-timers in the IT department to learn how we design, deploy, secure, and maintain the automation tools and key infrastructure components that are vital to Jane Street's success. Our Windows Engineers manage a combination of in-house-created systems, integrated open-source tools, and connections with industry-leading third-party platforms. These systems support the Windows desktop and server estate, as well as the company's overall tech infrastructure, regardless of the platform. Our automation tools enable Engineers to develop solutions and integrations quickly, efficiently, and reliably.

Your daily activities may include brainstorming process improvements, writing code, or learning new technologies our team plans to deploy. You will gain exposure to OCaml (our primary development language), F# (used with our Windows systems), and PowerShell (the scripting language for most of our IT automation), as well as the foundational libraries and tools in our internal systems.

Following initial training, you will work with full-time staff on projects drawn directly from our mission-critical stack. While the scope and content of these projects will vary, they may include:

• Developing and maintaining tools and applications related to Windows automation and configuration management.
• Improving CI/CD systems, cross-platform frameworks, and software development environments.
• Enhancing the efficiency and scalability of our tools, services, and monitoring solutions.
• Implementing editor and workflow improvements to streamline coding and deployment across IT.

About You

If you are new to finance, you are in good company; many of us were in your position. If you possess a curious mind, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for solving interesting problems, we believe you will fit well here. We are more interested in how you think and learn than in what you currently know. You should be:

• A strong programmer demonstrating high potential and a strong aptitude for learning.
• Experienced with .NET languages (C# or F#).
• Knowledgeable in operating system fundamentals and computer architecture.
• Able to understand network protocols at a basic level.
• Familiar with AI/LLMs and prompt engineering.
• Intellectually curious, collaborative, and eager to learn.
• Humble, and unafraid to ask questions or admit mistakes.
• A strong communicator.
• As comfortable working at the command line as in a GUI.
