Teaching Assistant, Academy of Math and Programming (AMP)

About the Position

We are seeking enthusiastic Teaching Assistants with strong backgrounds in mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative field for our Academy of Math and Programming (AMP) in New York City.

This is a temporary, six-week summer role, including one week of training before the five-week student program. AMP is a residential program serving recent high school graduates from diverse backgrounds who have experienced barriers to access and opportunity within advanced STEM education.

Students study mathematics, computer programming, data analysis, and game theory through challenging and interactive classes, problem-solving sessions, and games. You will work alongside instructors and other teaching assistants to support students in the classroom and help supervise the residential program.

Teaching Assistants support both the mathematics and computer science curricula. While we do not expect everyone to have equal depth across every topic, it is perfectly fine to have greater experience in one subject, provided you are excited to support both subjects and learn alongside the instructional team.

Responsibilities

• Help instructors deliver lessons in areas such as combinatorics, number theory, algorithms, programming, and software development.
• Work with students individually and in small groups during classes, problem-solving sessions, and study hours.
• Support classroom supervision, assignment review, and other academic coordination.
• Teach, guide, and play strategy games with students.
• Reside with students in the dormitory for the duration of the program and serve as an active, responsible program leader outside the classroom, supporting student well-being and reinforcing community expectations.
• Lead academic and social activities during evenings and select weekends.

About You

• Current undergraduate student in mathematics, computer science, or a related field.
• Experience with, or strong interest in, working with students in an academic or residential setting.
• A strong background in mathematics, computer science, or both; deeper expertise in one subject is acceptable.
• Comfortable with foundational programming and mathematical problem-solving, and willing to learn beyond your primary area of expertise.
• A patient and encouraging communicator who enjoys helping students work through challenging material.
• Able to exercise sound judgment, maintain clear boundaries, and handle sensitive student matters discreetly, escalating concerns when appropriate.
• A genuine interest in strategy, logic, and mathematical games is preferred.
• Available to live on site for the full program duration and support evening and select weekend activities.
