Senior/Engineer - Telephone System (Mobility Rail)

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Engineer or Engineer to join the Telephone System under the Integrated COMMS team within ST Engineering’s Mobility Rail division.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, integration, testing, commissioning, and delivery of telephone and voice communication systems for rail projects. You will work closely with internal engineering teams, customers, contractors, and system suppliers to ensure that the telephone system is reliable, maintainable, and fully integrated with the overall rail communication infrastructure.

This role is suitable for an engineer with hands-on experience in telephony, VoIP, PABX systems, or railway communication systems who is comfortable managing technical requirements and supporting projects from design through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out the design, engineering, integration, testing, and commissioning of telephone systems for rail projects.
• Prepare and review system designs, equipment layouts, network architecture, interface requirements, and technical specifications.
• Work with telephone and voice communication technologies such as IP-PBX, VoIP, SIP, analogue telephones, emergency telephones, hotline telephones, and voice recording systems.
• Ensure the telephone system is properly integrated with other communication and operational systems, including the transmission network, network management system, voice recording system, radio system, and operational control centre facilities.
• Review customer requirements, tender specifications, contractual documents, and applicable standards to ensure that the proposed system meets all technical and operational requirements.
• Coordinate with customers, consultants, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal project teams to resolve technical and interface matters.
• Prepare engineering documents such as design reports, interface documents, equipment schedules, method statements, test procedures, operation and maintenance manuals, and as-built documentation.
• Plan and conduct factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests, integration tests, and system commissioning activities.
• Investigate system faults, identify root causes, and work with relevant parties to implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Provide technical support during installation, testing, commissioning, trial operation, and the defects liability period.
• Monitor suppliers and subcontractors to ensure that equipment, documentation, and project deliverables are submitted according to the agreed schedule and quality requirements.
• Attend technical meetings, design reviews, interface meetings, and site coordination meetings as required.
• Keep up to date with developments in IP telephony, cybersecurity, network technologies, and communication systems used in the rail industry.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Relevant experience in the design, integration, testing, or maintenance of telephone and voice communication systems.
• Familiarity with communication networks, IP addressing, VLANs, Quality of Service, copper cabling, fibre-optic networks, and structured cabling systems.
• Experience in railway, transport, infrastructure, or other mission-critical communication projects would be an advantage.
• Able to read and prepare system architecture diagrams, block diagrams, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, and interface documents.
• Familiar with engineering processes such as requirements management, interface management, design reviews, system assurance, testing, and commissioning.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse faults across hardware, software, network, and system interfaces.
• Able to coordinate effectively with customers, suppliers, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Able to work effectively in an active construction environment and coordinate closely with contractors and site teams while complying with project safety requirements and site procedures.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical documents and explain technical matters to different stakeholders.
• Willing to support site activities, including installation inspections, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and night works when required by the project.
• Able to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a project team.
