2027 Summer Intern Program - Portfolio Management Group

SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students. Participants will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas, and support a range of deals with our clients.

Interns will engage in diverse projects such as building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings, all aimed at improving their understanding of the global banking industry. This Summer Intern Program serves as a pipeline to our full-time Analyst Program.

Desk Description

The Portfolio Management Group supports the bank’s leveraged loan and corporate lending business. This group is primarily responsible for monitoring the credit quality of large cap corporate borrowers and portfolio companies owned by Private Equity firms. The group also manages all amendment and periodic underwriting activities to support these businesses throughout the life of the bank’s relationship.

How Our Program Works

This Summer Intern Program is specifically designed for students who have completed their junior year.

This 10-week program begins in June and includes:

• Orientation
• Training with on-the-desk experience
• Senior Speaker Series
• Japanese cultural activities
• Social networking activities
• Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
• Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

Candidate Attributes

The successful candidate should possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a projected graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028, along with an excellent academic record.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to concisely communicate concepts and defend their validity.
• Ability to interact with clients in a professional and mature manner.
• Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment.
• Intellectual curiosity.

Work Environment: SMBC utilizes a hybrid workforce model, allowing employees to work from home or an SMBC office. Employees are required to live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Specific hybrid work schedules will be detailed during the interview process. Please note that in-office attendance for the entire workweek may be required for certain roles, such as specific FINRA-registered positions.
