Job Summary
The Tax Experienced Associate, International Tax Services will utilize their educational background and organizational skills while taking direction from more experienced team members to assist in consulting with clients on cross-border tax matters. Responsibilities include using tax research skills to provide international tax advice and working with tax software applications to assist clients with tax reporting obligations for international operations.
Job Duties
Tax Consulting
- Develop, recommend, and implement critical thinking to provide clients with tax advice on international tax issues
- Gain exposure to the development of work plans for all assigned clients
- Learn about international tax law relevant to particular clients and how that law can be appropriately applied to client facts
- Monitor tax law and client factual developments on a daily basis
- Coordinate with BDO non-US colleagues in approximately 160 countries on how US tax rules align with foreign tax law to impact client transactions
Tax Specialization
- Develop an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding international taxation and explore specializing in one or more international tax areas
Research
- Identify when research is necessary and frame issues to be researched; identify sources of all reliable and relevant information, including information tending to contradict preferred positions; access those sources and retrieve that information; analyze facts and authorities; understand their weight; and report on analysis
- Prepare Written Tax Advice (WTA) on international tax and cross-border transactions and seek assistance from more experienced team members as needed
Tax Compliance
- Assist in obtaining required client information to utilize in the preparation of international tax compliance forms and US international informational reporting
- Utilize tax compliance software to maximize efficiency in the tax preparation process
Tax Controversy
- Assist in preparing to represent clients before the IRS on contested issues
ASC 740-10
- Develop a basic understanding of ASC 740-10 as it applies to international tax issues and apply knowledge to client situations as applicable
- Understand and apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required; focus in Accounting preferred
- Juris Doctorate degree, LLM, and/or MST/MBT preferred
Experience
- One (1) or more years of prior experience in professional services or equivalent experience gained through an advanced degree program required
- Experience in international tax preferred
License/Certifications
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent preferred
Software
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) preferred
- Experience utilizing RIA, BNA, LexisNexis and/or Westlaw preferred

- Strong verbal and written communications skills
- Strong analytical and basic legal and tax research skills
- Solid organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task effectively, whether working independently or in a team
- Ability to interact with professionals at all levels
- Basic understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more areas of taxation and law
- Basic knowledge of general calculations and how taxable conditions affect clients and potential tax issues
Individual salaries offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
National Range: $63,000 - $115,500
Maryland Range: $63,000 - $115,500
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $63,000 - $115,500
Washington DC Range: $63,000 - $115,500
