Commercial Banking is our business-to-business offering, helping businesses of all sizes to grow—from small enterprises to large multinationals. We provide expert advice and essential services dependent on business needs. These services can include trade finance, global payments, multi-currency accounts, commercial cards, insurance, and many others.

You will need strong communication skills, attention to detail, teamwork, adaptability, and the confidence to take ownership of tasks. An interest in analyzing information and turning it into clear recommendations will be beneficial, as you will support presentations, reviews, and client work. Prior banking knowledge or finance fluency is not required; we will help you build this through structured training and placements. What matters most is your mindset, your willingness to learn, and your ability to work well with different people.

What You'll Do

From day one, you will work with Relationship Managers and specialist teams to support Commercial Banking clients. You will help build a clear picture of each client’s business, goals, and challenges, then determine how HSBC can bring the right resources together to respond. Your responsibilities may include preparing client presentations, reports, and credit papers, supporting strategic reviews and pitches, and carrying out financial analysis and risk assessments on portfolios and transactions. You will also collaborate with colleagues across Legal, Credit, and Risk to understand how we deliver tailored solutions responsibly. Across your placements, you will receive early exposure to client-facing work and see how strong relationships are built, grown, and protected over time.

What You'll Learn

You will build a strong foundation in commercial banking through structured training, four placements, and a degree apprenticeship that blends study with real experience. Initially, you will learn how HSBC supports business clients, how key banking products function, and how regulation shapes customer service. As you progress, you will deepen your understanding of client needs, risk, credit, and relationship-led banking. You will also work towards a BSc (Hons) in Applied Retail and Commercial Banking with the University of Exeter. By the end of the program, you will have developed practical banking knowledge, stronger commercial judgment, and the confidence to advance into a client-facing role.

You will work within HSBC’s Commercial Banking business alongside Relationship Managers and specialist teams that support clients of various sizes and sectors. It is a collaborative environment where banking, credit, risk, and legal teams unite to deliver holistic support for businesses. In the UK, you will be part of a client-focused team culture that values trust, teamwork, and strong communication. You can expect a professional environment where no two days are the same, with exposure to both office-based teamwork and client-facing activities.

Eligibility Criteria

This is a Degree Apprenticeship; therefore, you must meet the program’s apprenticeship and academic entry requirements where applicable. To be eligible, you must:

• Be available to work full-time from November 2027 for 50 months.
• Have obtained 5 or more GCSEs at a minimum of grade 4/C.
• Have obtained, or expect to obtain, a minimum of BCC across your top 3 A-levels, or equivalent.
• Be fluent in English.
• Have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 consecutive years before the start of the Apprenticeship, and have a continued Right to Work in the UK for the full duration of the programme.
