Role
Underwriter I – Healthcare, London, UK. Part of the Healthcare Team within the London Wholesale Casualty unit. The Healthcare team writes a mix of open market insureds and delegated contracts, predominantly domiciled in the US, with segments including Hospitals, Long Term Care, Correctional, Physicians, and Life Science. Business is written under Lloyd’s and Company stamp, mainly on a Primary and Lead basis. The team has operated in London for 25+ years and is led by Glen Secular, comprising three Underwriters and an Assistant Underwriter in London, plus two Underwriting Assistants in Ipswich. Supported by Claims, Actuarial, Finance, and Risk Consulting, the team leads off Quota Share placements and focuses on strategic growth while maintaining client relationships. This is a regulated role under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity regime. The role requires travel to achieve objectives and visibility in the community to reinforce AXA XL’s brand.
Your Opportunity
Joining AXA XL as an Underwriter you will work with a wide range of clients to provide innovative and bespoke underwriting services. Each risk is unique, delivering a best-practice, market-leading experience for clients and brokers. You will write new and renewal business for an allocated range of clients, collaborate with Brokers and direct clients, and support the profitable growth of the book. The role includes innovative pricing and policy wordings, supporting any claims within your client base, and monitoring exposure with the Actuarial and Claims teams. You will report to the Head of Healthcare and US Casualty.
What you’ll be doing
- Review submissions, including applications, policy wordings, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports; conduct research to determine degree of risk for each account.
- Calculate appropriate risk premiums by considering risk costs, reinsurance cessions, and Underwriting and administration costs to ensure profitability.
- Proactively advise, assist, service, and follow up with clients on insurance and risk management matters to ensure satisfaction.
- Manage relationships to identify cross-selling opportunities and ensure account retention.
- Ensure timely implementation of new and renewed accounts according to quality standards.
- Underwrite within the agreed business plan and authority; support the design and structure of risks.
- Support departmental strategy and achieve P&L metrics; mentor and share underwriting knowledge with team members.
- Maintain market visibility by marketing to insureds and brokers.
- Review loss control reports and manage policy endorsements to process necessary changes.
- Support business planning and forecasting; monitor financial exposure and premium income within set limits.
- Maintain awareness of all advised claims and contribute to settlements where appropriate.
- Collaborate in a team environment, assisting underwriters, underwriting assistants, and management.
What you’ll bring
- Proven underwriting experience, ideally with a track record of profitable underwriting in Healthcare lines.
- Strong industry knowledge and awareness of market factors impacting this segment.
- Excellent customer service skills, with strong written and verbal communication.
- Analytical, negotiation, and sales capabilities; experience in policy development and broker management for the relevant lines.
- Proficiency with systems, including proficient Microsoft Office skills and other relevant platforms.
- Adaptability to changing environments with flexibility and innovation.
- Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, networking, marketing, collaboration, and presentation experience.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with customers, producers, and brokers.
- Excellent time management; ability to multi-task and work effectively under pressure.
- Ability to lead in alignment with AXA XL’s core values and culture.
