Systems Engineering Intern (New York) – Summer 2027

The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated individuals with impressive records of academic and/or professional achievement to join the firm as systems engineering interns. Engineers at the firm are responsible for designing, developing, and managing the firm’s global technology infrastructure. The role offers the opportunity to be part of a collaborative and collegial work environment. This roughly 12-week program will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2027.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate on a mix of software development and infrastructure work, such as building a wide range of technical solutions in areas including Linux and Windows management, database infrastructure, application engineering, DevOps, and information security.
• Develop full-stack web applications, build solutions to help find software vulnerabilities, administer various infrastructure-level systems, and/or develop efficiency improvements for all platforms.
• Engage in specific projects matched to interests and experience, such as building automation for operating system upgrades, optimizing large-scale infrastructure operations, enhancing security information and event management systems, and collaborating with teams across the Systems group to deploy a full-stack web app for firmwide use.

Who We're Looking For

• Enrollment in a degree program in computer science, computer engineering, or another technical discipline, with a strong record of achievement.
• A solid foundation in computer science demonstrated through past internships, personal projects, or contributions to open-source platforms.
• Keen problem-solving abilities, intellectual curiosity, and strong collaboration, communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Proficiency in algorithms, software development, and systems infrastructure; ability to effectively use AI-assisted development tools when coding in Python, JavaScript, Go, or similar languages.
• Practical experience working with technical infrastructure in one of our focus areas (Windows, Linux/UNIX, Cloud, Networking, or information security) is a plus but not required.
• Current enrollment in a four-year undergraduate or postgraduate degree in any field of study is welcome; no prior finance experience is necessary. Students applying for this internship are typically in their final year of full-time study.

Compensation & Benefits

• Monthly base salary of $21,000.
• Overtime pay and a sign-on bonus of $15,000.
• Travel coverage to and from the internship.
• Choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance.
• $3,300 stipend for self-study materials and $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment.
