Systems Administrator Industry Placement Year (London)

Overview

The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated individuals with impressive academic and/or professional achievement to join the firm’s Systems team for a 12-month industry placement as systems administrators. The Systems team manages a broad range of technology infrastructure, supporting the firm’s operations through innovative solutions and collaborative problem-solving. This program will take place in London and is expected to run from June 2027 to June 2028. Eligibility for this position is subject to the firm’s review of any terms or conditions required by the applicant’s school relating to industry placement.

What you’ll do day-to-day

• Be responsible for a variety of project and support work across a wide range of technology, including Windows PCs and servers, UNIX servers, mobile devices, cutting-edge storage and clustered computing solutions, and several communications platforms.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams to support and deploy on-premise and cloud services.
• Work may include troubleshooting complex technical issues, administering various infrastructure-level systems, and implementing automation and efficiency improvements.

Who we’re looking for

• Basic knowledge of the on-premise and cloud Microsoft enterprise environments and a demonstrated interest in improving processes and technology (e.g., through past internship experience, on-campus employment at a university helpdesk, personal projects, and/or academic achievements).
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project management skills, as the role involves working with global colleagues across various backgrounds, experiences, and projects.
• The ability to excel at combining critical analysis and research to solve unfamiliar problems.
• Familiarity or experience with general systems administration, Linux environments, and Python, PowerShell, or similar technologies is a plus, as is the ability to effectively use AI-assisted development tools and AI automation techniques.
• An approach to work defined by curiosity and motivation over any particular skill or experience, reflecting the firm’s culture and the ever-changing nature of our work.
• Enrollment in the penultimate year of a degree program with eligibility for an industry placement.
