Underwriter I - Marine Liability & Ports

As an Underwriter in our established Marine Liability & Ports team, you will be responsible for delivering a profitable underwriting service to our clients. This role involves managing business across our diverse marine liability, ports, and terminals portfolio while actively supporting business planning and forecasting.

Key Responsibilities

Your key tasks will include:

• Underwriting business across the marine liability, ports, and terminals portfolio.
• Supporting the business planning and forecasting process.
• Monitoring financial exposure within outlined limits.
• Monitoring premium income to ensure it remains within set limits.
• Maintaining awareness of all advised claims while supporting and providing input on claim settlements.
• Ensuring adequate reinsurance coverage is acquired for specific risks.
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with brokers and clients.
• Supporting the design and structuring of risks.

Operational Duties

Essential responsibilities include:

• Reviewing submissions, including applications, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports, while conducting appropriate research to determine the risk level for each account.
• Calculating the appropriate risk premium by considering inherent risk costs, reinsurance cessions, and underwriting/administration costs to ensure profitability.
• Proactively advising, assisting, servicing, and following up with clients on insurance and risk management matters to ensure their requirements are met.
• Effectively managing relationships to initiate opportunities for cross-selling and ensure account retention.
• Controlling the timely implementation of new and renewed accounts according to established quality standards.
• Coordinating with internal teams to determine appropriate reinsurance for risk placements on excess of loss and quota share bases.
• Reviewing loss control reports and managing policy endorsement requests to process necessary policy changes.

Note: You will report to the Head of Marine Liability & Ports, UK & Lloyd’s.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for candidates possessing the following abilities and skills:

Qualifications and Experience

• Strong technical experience and expertise in marine liability and ports underwriting, demonstrating skills reflective of a fully competent practitioner.
• Knowledge of the Marine Insurance Industry and Commercial/Business Acumen, preferably with exposure to Lloyd's and Global markets.
• Analytical, negotiation, and sales/marketing skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• A strong focus on customer service is mandatory.
• Interpersonal Savvy: Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with insured parties and brokers.
• Ability to develop and understand business processes, strategy, and planning.
• A collaborative team player who provides creative solutions and ideas for resolution.
