Purpose of the Role

The Stewardship Analyst will review, analyze, and formulate voting decisions for companies held in various Fidelity funds and institutional client portfolios. The individual will also assist in gathering research, writing memoranda, and providing governance and sustainability advice to other business units within the fund complex as required.

The individual will support the Sustainable Investing Team in daily activities, including:

• Working with investment professionals to integrate ESG analysis into their investment analysis and providing them with requisite ESG research and data.
• Completing ESG risk analysis within portfolios and sector coverage.
• Working with client-facing teams to provide evidence of the ESG integration process to clients and consultants.
• Engaging with companies on ESG issues.

Key Responsibilities

Proxy Analysis

Proxy analysis involves an in-depth review of all available public disclosure, including internal and external research. Sources of information include company annual reports and circulars, Fidelity equity analyst research notes, and third-party research reports from various sources.

This analysis requires familiarity with issues presented for shareholder approval, such as board of directors elections, executive remuneration and incentive plans, requests for additional capital authorization, acquisitions/disposals, anti-takeover devices, and shareholder proposals. The analyst should possess a working knowledge of the proxy voting process as well as substantive corporate governance and sustainability issues in major developed markets.

Research and Writing Skills

The position requires strong writing and research skills. Writing and research assignments typically involve producing explanations for wider distribution within Fidelity regarding specific pending proxy voting decisions, as well as memoranda on topical ESG issues. The analysis demands the ability to identify issues for escalation. Additionally, the analyst will contribute to the production of reports for distribution to Fidelity clients alongside internal ESG reporting.

Internal and External Communication

The candidate will be required to develop mutually productive relationships with individuals across the Fidelity fund complex, including equity research, legal, compliance, investment directors, institutional, and sales & marketing teams. Externally, the candidate may interact with custodian banks, voting/ESG vendors, and brokers. Furthermore, the candidate must be able to consult with investee companies, including board members, the company secretary, and Investor Relations (IR) on ESG issues. The candidate may also represent Fidelity at General Meetings, industry conferences, and panel discussions.

Project Management/Operational Skills and Problem-Solving

This role requires strong project management skills and the ability to solve problems creatively. The candidate may be tasked with participating in projects aimed at facilitating and streamlining team processes and must remain alert to solutions that can enhance efficiency.

ESG Support

In addition to core proxy voting support, the candidate will collaborate with Fidelity equity analysts and portfolio managers across asset classes to maintain awareness of ESG stock drivers and implement sustainability practices into the investment process. The candidate will also partner with the RFP team and other institutional support teams to organize responses to sustainability and ESG-related questionnaires.
