Introduction to Sustainability at Temasek

At Temasek, sustainability is at the core of everything we do—from our mandate to deliver sustainable value over the long term, to our strategy for how we operate as an institution, shape our portfolio, and engage our portfolio companies to build sustainable businesses.

In partnership with various teams across Temasek and our broader ecosystem, the Sustainability Group initiates, develops, and implements strategies to build a climate-resilient, net-zero portfolio to enable nature positive and inclusive growth. We also catalyze new business opportunities and solutions that contribute to sustainable development, advance thought leadership on sustainability topics, and support our growth as a sustainable organization to create shared value aligned with our mandate of generating sustainable returns over the long term.

The Sustainability Group comprises the following sub-teams:

• Sustainability Strategy: Advance our strategy and policy towards net zero, nature positive, and inclusive growth and drive institutional and community-related sustainability initiatives.
• Sustainable Solutions: Drive decarbonisation in portfolio companies and unlock new investment opportunities in Sustainable Living trends by identifying emerging thematics and catalysing innovative solutions.
• ESG Investment Management: Advance ESG integration across our investment process, including portfolio engagement, to help strengthen long-term portfolio resiliency and value creation.
• Ecosperity: Accelerate systems-change by harnessing our Ecosperity platform to drive year-round engagements, thought leadership, and advocacy.

Sustainable Solutions Focus

The Sustainable Solutions team drives sustainability in portfolio companies (including decarbonisation and water consumption) and unlocks new opportunities in Sustainable Living trends by identifying emerging thematics and catalyzing innovative solutions. This involves:

• Catalyzing decarbonisation solutions that accelerate the decarbonisation of Temasek’s portfolio in alignment with Temasek 2030 and 2050 portfolio decarbonisation targets.
• Focusing on technology sectors that have an outsize impact on Temasek’s total portfolio emissions, including low-carbon energy solutions (such as hydrogen, fusion, and fission energy, and advanced geothermal energy), advanced biofuels and e-fuels for maritime and aviation applications, electrification of heavy industry, data centre cooling efficiency improvements, and water solutions.

Intern Responsibilities

The Sustainable Solutions team seeks interns who are highly passionate about decarbonization, knowledgeable about clean energy and water technologies and/or markets, and driven by a strong work ethic. Successful candidates will support this small, nimble team in a variety of job functions and can expect to gain exposure to cutting-edge technology development while working with a global set of stakeholders.

Responsibilities include:

• Support the team to catalyze solutions to decarbonize the Temasek portfolio across multiple clean energy and water sectors, including deploying capital and solutions. Solutions will largely focus on technology innovation, but may also include ecosystem enabling initiatives and/or policy and regulation proposals.
• Research and analyze new technology areas focusing on decarbonization trends, policy and regulatory developments, and market and commercial drivers to distil actionable insights for the wider Temasek Ecosystem.
• Engage team stakeholders to validate problem statements, as needed.

Candidate Requirements

• Able to commit full-time for a minimum of 20 weeks. Interns who can commit to a full-time (5 days/week) or minimum part-time (4 days/week) internship are strongly preferred.
• Pursuing a degree in science, engineering, business, and finance are highly preferred. Advanced degree candidates are welcome to apply as well.
• Knowledgeable about clean energy and water technologies and/or markets, driven by a strong work ethic.
• Some familiarity with technoeconomic and financial modeling will be advantageous.
• Ability to navigate and coordinate across diverse stakeholders, with strong people skills.
• Creative, forward-looking, organized, with good attention to detail, and results-oriented.
• Good communicator in both written and oral communication.
• Passionate about creating a positive, sustainable climate impact.
