Program Overview
Summer Associates work in the Global Markets Group of BMO Capital Markets. The group includes desks such as Equity Sales and Trading, Clearpool E-trading, Prime Finance, Structured Notes Sales and Trading, Leveraged Finance, Securitized Products Sales and Trading, Origination, US Interest Rates Sales and Trading, and Global Markets Engineering.
Summer interns will work on one desk in Global Markets over a 10-week period. Interns will receive specific job descriptions prior to starting. The first week includes onboarding and training across BMO Capital Markets, followed by a Showcase day presentation and a matching process based on preference and skill set. Continuous professional development throughout the summer includes teach-ins, trading games, meetings with senior leaders, and networking events.
Responsibilities
Summer interns are fully integrated into an assigned desk, and responsibilities vary daily based on business needs and market conditions. Depending on the assigned desk, intern skill set, and business needs, responsibilities may include:
- Development and deployment of business solutions such as pricing and risk models.
- Market data capture and display, and spreadsheet development.
- Providing insight into trading strategies leveraging quantitative modelling.
- Improving existing technology involving system infrastructure, internal reporting, and client/management presentations.
- Bespoke projects requiring market, portfolio, or client research and data analytics.
- Developing client trade ideas.
Qualifications and Requirements

Required Qualifications
- Pursuing a Master's degree in Financial Engineering, Mathematics, Financial Math, Physics, Statistics, Engineering, Quantitative Finance, Computer Science, or another related quantitative field.
- Completing the degree in December 2027 or Spring 2028.
- Excellent programming skills in C++, Java, Matlab, Python, R, or Scala.
- Strong mathematical academic training.
- Keen interest in financial markets.
- Drive and desire to work in an intense, team-oriented environment.
- Excellent decision-making abilities.
- Strong communication skills.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual base salary for this position is USD$150,000.
Pay Type: Salaried.
The stated base salary represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range. Actual salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on regularly worked hours. For commission roles, the listed salary is BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year.
BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package varies by position pay type and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, and other perks.
