Role details
Job Summary
AWS Infrastructure Services designs, plans, delivers, and operates AWS global infrastructure—supporting all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that keep the cloud running. This role is part of Amazon Web Services Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) and is focused on the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical cooling and water systems infrastructure across the data centre portfolio.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair pipework, fittings, valves, and manifolds across cooling distribution loops, chilled water systems, and condenser water circuits.
- Operate and maintain air handling units (AHUs), chillers, cooling towers, evaporative cooling systems, and liquid cooling infrastructure.
- Perform pressure testing, leak detection, and system integrity checks on pressurised water circuits.
- Manage water treatment programmes in line with ACOP L8 and HSG274 requirements, including legionella risk assessments, temperature monitoring, chemical dosing, and biocide application.
- Maintain and troubleshoot pumps, heat exchangers, coolant distribution units (CDUs), and associated mechanical components.
- Monitor thermal performance of cooling systems and identify opportunities to optimise flow rates, delta-T, and energy efficiency.
- Support commissioning and decommissioning of mechanical cooling infrastructure during capacity additions.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on mechanical assets including filter changes, belt replacements, pump seal replacements, bearing inspections, and valve servicing.
- Respond to alarms and incidents related to leaks, pressure anomalies, thermal exceedances, or water quality deviations within SLA.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, water treatment logs, system parameters, and defect logs.
- Collaborate with controls engineers on BMS/SCADA integration for mechanical plant monitoring.
- Adhere to all site safety procedures including permit-to-work, LOTO, and working at height protocols.
- Work safely at all times, following risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work (SSOW) for maintenance and operational activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system reliability and reduce mean time to repair.
About the Team
Amazon Web Services Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) is seeking a mechanically-biased Engineering Operations Technician. This hands-on role supports mechanical cooling and water systems infrastructure across the data centre portfolio. The position works directly with air handling units, chillers, cooling towers, evaporative cooling systems, liquid cooling distribution, and associated water treatment plant. The role requires strong mechanical aptitude with expertise in plumbing, pipework, pressurised water systems, and fluid dynamics. You will maintain system integrity, ensure compliance with ACOP regulations, optimise thermal performance, and support scaling of cooling capacity as the fleet grows.
This is a shift-based role requiring flexibility to support 24/7 data centre operations. You will work alongside electrical and controls engineers, with primary focus on mechanical systems and fluid management.
Basic Qualifications
- Knowledge of mechanical systems (Mechanical, HVAC systems, Controls).
- Experience reading and writing procedures, technical documents, and engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of generic mechanical room infrastructure such as chillers, cooler units, and fan controls.
- NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics, or NFQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule/shift/work area, including weekends, nights, and/or holidays.
- Demonstrable experience working with pressurised water systems, pipework installations, and fluid distribution networks.
- Knowledge of ACOP L8 (Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems) and HSG274 guidance, with experience implementing compliant water treatment regimes.
- Practical understanding of fluid dynamics principles including flow rates, pressure drop, cavitation, and heat transfer.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with EPMS/SCADA/BMS controls system software or hardware.
- Direct experience with liquid cooling technologies such as CDUs, rear-door heat exchangers, or direct-to-chip cooling.
- City & Guilds 2079 or equivalent Legionella control qualification.
- Knowledge of water treatment processes including closed-loop and open-loop system management, corrosion inhibitors, and microbiological control.
- IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate.
- Experience with commissioning or decommissioning of mechanical systems.
- Understanding of cooling architectures and thermal management principles.
