Operations Technician

About

The Hardware Operations team is responsible for monitoring the physical infrastructure behind Google’s technology. As an Operations Technician, you will install, configure, test, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware (such as servers and their components) and server software (such as Google’s Linux cluster). You will also configure more complex components including networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and networking protocols. You may participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans. A typical day involves manual movement and installation of racks, and the work can be physically demanding, but it involves hands-on work with computer technology.

Technical Infrastructure builds and maintains the architecture that keeps Google’s services running—from developing and operating data centers to building the next generation of platforms. The team focuses on reliability and performance by keeping networks up and running to provide users with a fast and reliable experience.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across projects or functions.
  • Report issues and follow data center procedures to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment or infrastructure problems as they arise, and apply the resources needed to resolve identified issues.
  • Maintain the security and integrity of data by tracking various forms of media to address standard data security issues (e.g., ensuring data is properly erased) in accordance with Google security standards.
  • Disassemble equipment that has reached end-of-life through part replacement or maintenance in a team setting.
  • Repair, fix, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, or infrastructure based on identified issues with defined solutions and limited guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience assembling mechanical or electrical systems, or performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lb (23 kg) of equipment and to exert yourself physically over extended periods, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling, and lifting.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and shift-based schedules as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems and computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
  • Experience with Linux professional institute certification or equivalent experience working with Linux (Red Hat, Slackware, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo) or Unix (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, BSD) or similar operating systems.
  • Experience performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on IT equipment or in a similar role (e.g., systems administration, network deployment engineer, help desk technician).
  • Experience in project leadership and management.
  • Experience working within a data center or network operations center environment.
