What you will do

The QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey Immersion Program offers a clear pathway to assess potential and understand if a career in technical consulting aligns with your goals after university graduation.

During the program, you will typically join a client engagement and may contribute to the development of one of our products or an R&D project when opportunities arise. Engagement work spans private, public, and social sectors. You will be placed with teams and will play an active role in all aspects of the engagement.

Your role involves working in interdisciplinary teams of Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Machine Learning Engineers, Designers, Software Engineers, and McKinsey experts to solve problems by connecting real-world business questions to machine learning methods. You will support our client services lead, identify business hypotheses and metrics, and have the opportunity to define and drive the analytical scope and method for projects, including formulating and shaping models.

Responsibilities

• Use math, statistics, and machine learning to derive key insights across various industry sectors
• Write highly optimized code
• Develop world-class data science products for clients and for the data science team
• Apply your academic background to develop and apply machine learning methods to improve client performance
• Develop prompt engineering strategies, RAG optimization, etc., for Generative AI engagements if involved
• Collaborate with team members to develop complex data science code and algorithms
• Participate in team stand-ups, client meetings, and problem-solving sessions

As part of QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, you will listen, learn, challenge thoughtfully, and prioritize impact. You will work with colleagues in the best interests of QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, and our clients. You will seek ways to improve processes, experiment with new approaches, and move forward quickly.

QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey helps companies use data to drive decisions. We combine business experience, expertise in large-scale data analysis and visualization, and advanced software engineering to deliver results. From aerospace to finance to Formula One, we prototype, develop, and deploy bespoke data science and data visualization solutions to enable better decisions.

You will be based in Thailand or Indonesia and participate in the QuantumBlack Immersion Program for 8–10 weeks.

Your background

• University students in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or equivalent experience with expected graduation date in 2026 or 2027
• Experience applying machine learning and data mining techniques to real problems with large datasets in a professional setting (e.g., internship) is a plus
• Programming (focus on machine learning): Python (must), SQL, PySpark (valued)
• Exposure to prototype statistical analysis and modeling algorithms and applying these algorithms to data-driven solutions in new domains
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop creative and efficient solutions
• Good presentation and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex analytical concepts to non-specialists
• Strong command of English (verbal and written)
• Willingness to travel
