Overview

You’re curious and keen to learn. If you don’t have a background in finance, what matters is ambition to explore it, drive to make an impact, and confidence to take on new challenges. If fast-paced environments suit you, you thrive in a team and want to build real-world career experience with support every step of the way, this internship could be for you.

What you’ll do

  • Join a dedicated deal team and work closely with colleagues focused on specific transactions, products, or business sectors. Collaborate with banking teams across the globe to help find solutions for clients, including corporates, private equity firms, and financial institutions.
  • Experience different areas of banking by being placed in Strategic Advisory, Corporate Finance, or Financing Solutions depending on interests and business needs.
  • Get exposure to live deals and contribute to supporting work that helps make transactions happen.
  • Build your understanding of financial statements—read balance sheets, spot anomalies, and calculate key ratios with support if you’re new to it.
  • Help create client materials by researching market conditions and preparing documents like investment memos, management presentations, and pitchbooks.
  • Explore how financial models work, including valuation, mergers and acquisitions analysis, and financing assessments. Learn techniques like discounted cash flow and leveraged buyouts.
  • Conduct research and credit analysis—track market developments, analyze company performance, and contribute to internal insights and client-facing materials.
  • Develop your technical toolkit by sharpening Excel and PowerPoint skills and producing polished, client-ready presentations.

You’ll kick off your internship with a week of dedicated training led by external experts. By the end of your time with us, you’ll have a clearer understanding of HSBC and investment banking and where you could fit in. Perform well and you’ll have the opportunity of a space on our graduate programme.

What we’re looking for

  • Collaboration – You’re a team player who works well with people at all levels, from fellow interns to Senior Bankers. You’re reliable, supportive, and ready to contribute to shared goals.
  • Analytical thinking – You enjoy working with numbers, spotting patterns, and paying attention to details. You review data and check for formatting issues with a methodical approach.
  • Clear communication – You can explain ideas simply and clearly, whether to a fellow intern or a senior team member. You write concise emails and can create slides that tell a clear story.
  • Resilience – You stay positive under pressure, meet deadlines, and remain focused when the pace picks up.
  • Ownership – You take responsibility for your tasks and care about quality, understanding how your work contributes to the bigger picture.
  • Relationship building – You are friendly, professional, and good with people, and you support the development of strong client relationships alongside more senior colleagues.
