Location: London, United Kingdom

Start date: October 2026

Duration: 36 months

About the business area

Commercial Banking is our business-to-business offering, helping businesses of all sizes to grow—from small enterprises to large multinationals. We provide expert advice and essential services dependent on business needs, including trade finance, global payments, multi-currency accounts, commercial cards, and insurance, among others.

Who you are

We’re looking for people who love building connections, supporting others, and making a real impact. You don’t need to know everything about banking—bring your curiosity and drive, and we’ll help with the rest. This is a customer-centric business focused on people and continuously evolving. You’ll need a flexible mindset to deliver exceptional service in an ever-changing environment.

  • A natural communicator: You express yourself clearly and enjoy helping others understand new concepts.
  • A people person: You love getting to know people and building relationships.
  • Fast-paced and detail-oriented: You can juggle different tasks, work well under pressure, and pay attention to detail as priorities evolve.
  • Team player: You enjoy working with others and understand that success is a team effort.
  • Sense of ownership: You take initiative and propose solutions rather than waiting for others to act.
  • Eager to learn: You are curious, always wanting to learn more and ready to acquire new knowledge.
  • Self-aware: You understand how your actions affect others and seek personal and professional growth.

What you’ll do

From day one, you’ll be part of a dedicated team focused on building, growing, and protecting deep, trusted relationships with our Commercial Banking clients. You’ll actively contribute to helping clients succeed and safeguarding their legacy, while strengthening HSBC’s position as a trusted partner.

  • Work with specialist teams: See how Relationship Managers partner with experts across the bank to grow client relationships and deliver tailored financial solutions.
  • Get early exposure to clients: Start building connections from the outset, gaining insight into clients’ businesses, goals, and how HSBC’s solutions—such as sustainable supply chains and green bonds—can support their success.
  • Act as the link between HSBC and its clients: Help the team understand clients inside out to ensure the right solutions are delivered at the right time.
  • See collaboration in action: Experience cross-team, cross- geography, and cross-functional collaboration, including Legal, Credit, and Risk, to deliver for clients.
  • Get hands-on with real tasks: Help create client presentations, reports, and credit papers; support strategic reviews and pitches; conduct financial analysis and risk assessments on client portfolios and transactions.

What you’ll learn

Your journey begins with structured expert-led training to equip you with the technical know-how to hit the ground running. The first months focus on settling into HSBC and your initial placement. The apprenticeship qualification begins in January.

  • The Degree Apprenticeship consists of four placements with client exposure from the start.
  • Placements one and two develop understanding of how we support clients, the services offered, and the regulatory environment.
  • Placements three and four may lead to promotion and more advanced roles, including client-facing autonomy, leading key projects, or team leadership with accountability for others.
  • By the end of the programme, you’ll have a solid understanding of our products, customers, and services, and be positioned for a permanent role within client-facing teams.

Eligibility criteria

  • Available to work full time from October 2026 onwards
  • A minimum of BCC across your top 3 A-levels (or equivalent)
  • 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including Maths and English
  • Fluent in English

Please note: All candidates will be invited to complete an assessment unless you declare you do not meet the criteria and have no mitigating circumstances. If you have equivalent qualifications, we’ll need to check these with our training provider after your assessment to ensure they meet the required criteria.

You can check whether you are likely to meet the provider's entry requirements here. If you are unsure, please complete this form to the best of your knowledge and the team will be in touch if we have any queries: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/entryrequirements/ukacademicqualifications/

This is not an exhaustive list, and further checks may be completed which could determine you are not eligible for this programme at a later stage of the process.
