You are

We’re looking for logical problem-solvers who enjoy finding patterns and making decisions with data. You don’t need to know everything about Quantitative Finance yet – what matters most is your drive to learn, your integrity, and your ability to stay sharp under pressure.

You’ll need

  • To be working towards a Master’s or PhD in a Mathematical or Quantitative subject (e.g. Maths, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Quantitative Finance).
  • Solid grounding in mathematics, statistics and probability.
  • Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language (e.g. Python, C++, Java).
  • A demonstrable independent research project (e.g. Master’s thesis, PhD).
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: machine learning, signal processing, stochastic calculus, optimisation, numerical analysis, forecasting models, Monte Carlo simulation.

What you’ll do

You’ll support our Markets & Securities Services business in our Trading, Sales, Structuring or Quantitative teams. You’ll get to use cutting-edge techniques across derivatives, algorithmic trading, financial products engineering, machine learning and data analysis.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s involved:

  • Supporting colleagues worldwide, learning from their expertise.
  • Researching and interpreting data from financial statements, economic indicators, news and market trends.
  • Supporting traders with data collection, visualisation, report generation and maintaining records.
  • Monitoring market performance, spotting opportunities, risks and potential trade strategies.
  • Competing in virtual trading exercises to sharpen decision-making skills.
  • Learning the dynamics that drive markets, understanding correlations and building a feel for what to watch when trading.
  • Formulating clear market views and confidently presenting trade ideas and investment solutions.
  • Working closely with traders to perform risk assessments, apply different strategies and develop trading ideas.
  • Training on Bloomberg, Reuters and HSBC’s proprietary tools.
  • Developing coding and data skills, using Excel, VBA and Python to build tools and models.

What you’ll learn

  • On-the-ground experience – real-world exposure to global markets.
  • Expert-led insight – a 12-week programme covering HSBC’s approach to quantitative analytics and its role in the wider bank.
  • Stakeholder management – learn to work across teams, cultures and geographies.
  • Future focus – understand where Markets is heading, from customised trading systems to automation.

Eligibility criteria

  • Available to work full time for 12 weeks commencing in May/June 2026.
  • To be working towards a Master’s or PhD in a Mathematical or Quantitative subject (e.g. Maths, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Quantitative Finance).
  • Fluent in English.
