What is a Registered Apprenticeship in the US?
A Registered Apprenticeship in the US is a paid job that combines on-the-job learning with job-related classroom training and leads to an industry-recognized, nationally portable credential, as the Department of Labor's Apprenticeship.gov describes it.
Each program is approved by the Department of Labor or a State Apprenticeship Agency, and the Department's Office of Apprenticeship oversees the National Registered Apprenticeship System. Apprentices earn a wage from the first day that rises as their skills develop, and learn on the job from an experienced mentor. Apprenticeship.gov counts more than 800,000 apprentices a year across the country.

How long does a Registered Apprenticeship last in the US?
A Registered Apprenticeship in the US lasts as long as its program sets under federal rules: at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job learning, until the apprentice reaches set competencies, or a blend of the two.
The Department of Labor or a State Apprenticeship Agency, as the program's Registration Agency, approves which of the three it uses. The rules set a recommended minimum of 144 hours of related classroom instruction for each year of apprenticeship. Wages rise on a schedule as skills are gained, starting at no less than the Fair Labor Standards Act minimum wage where it applies, and an apprentice who completes the program receives a certificate from the Registration Agency.
