Assistant Lawyer

The Assistant Lawyer will assist Laura Onwuka and Tom Stevenson in our Crime and Regulatory Team, dealing with motor crime cases and inquests from the day of the incident. This role involves investigating incident circumstances, supporting clients, taking statements, attending interviews under caution, and assisting with the case through to resolution.

The Crime & Regulatory team predominantly handles motor crime, nursing/care sector, and health & safety cases (for insurer and private clients). This particular role will have an emphasis on motor crime cases.

This is a technical and client-facing role for a well-rounded lawyer. You must have a keen interest in building client relationships through the delivery of training and mentoring, as well as in delivering first-class legal solutions to complex problems.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and analyse prosecution evidence, considering implications for lay clients/companies.
• Draft statements for insureds and witnesses.
• Review client evidence: obtaining, collating, indexing, and cross-referencing with own statements and Prosecution's statements, and summarising evidence for lead file handlers.
• Liaise with the Court, Coroner's Office, CQC, Police, HSE, or relevant regulators.
• Liaise with experts: instructing own experts, summarising expert evidence, and serving reports.
• Serve Defence case statements, sentencing bundles, and mitigation bundles.
• Draft written submissions, following liaison with lay or corporate clients.
• Liaise with Insureds regarding the Prosecution's case and disclosure requirements.
• Review transcripts of evidence.
• Organise and attend conferences and meetings, drafting notes of discussion and following the agreed strategy set by the lead lawyer.
• Attend and represent clients at interviews under caution.
• Attend behind Counsel for trials and inquests—drafting notes on evidence, outcomes, and sentencing.
• Arrange meetings, conferences, site visits, and expert appointments.
• Chase transcripts and disclosure, and collate evidence.
• Review medical records, post-mortem reports, and CCTV footage.
• Attend sites, take photographs, and draft basic statements.
• Conduct research into relevant HSE guidelines.
• Research Insureds' corporate structure, procedures, risk assessments, and documents.
• Collate witness availability.
• Prepare and serve bundles for hearings.
• Ensure compliance with the SRA Code of Conduct.

Qualifications and Skills

A qualified Solicitor or a paralegal with Police Station Accreditation is required.

Essential Requirements

• Must have a valid driving licence and regularly drive a vehicle to ensure road awareness and knowledge of the Highway Code.
