Role details

About the Role

S&P Global Energy is seeking an experienced Analyst for its Commodity Risk Solutions team. We create solutions to support commodity risk functions in most of the energy commodity markets globally, primarily developing quantitatively-derived forward curves for markets with little to no liquidity. We are a multi-disciplinary team, covering many commodities and regions, responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and operating our models.

The Impact

The analyst will work across the entire value chain at S&P Global Energy. This includes partnering with sales and product management to define market opportunities, collaborating with S&P Global Energy editorial and analytical staff to develop new forward curves and other products, building and coding the necessary infrastructure to publish these curves, and monitoring curve performance daily. They will leverage their market and product knowledge to assist sales in effectively defining and describing our offerings to customers.

What’s in it for you

This position offers a challenging learning curve, allowing you to significantly deepen subject matter expertise in various commodity markets. You will also gain proficiency in the technologies that enable us to develop and publish our curves, including Matlab, SQL, and Excel, with less reliance on external support. Furthermore, due to our unique organizational position, you will work closely with the product management organization on related editorial products.

Responsibilities

  • Develop algorithms for new forward pricing points for illiquid locations and commodities.
  • Implement algorithms using Matlab and SQL.
  • Update related technical documentation.
  • Perform analysis and modeling, including the development of quantitative, analytical, and statistical models.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure the daily, proper publication of commodity curves.
  • Respond to client requests and inquiries requiring data or analysis.

Experience Required

  • Proven work experience performing commodity quantitative or market analysis in one or more of the following markets: Crude Oil, Refined Products, Electricity, Natural Gas, LNG, or Metals.
  • Regional commodity experience from Europe/Middle East or Asia.
  • Essential experience with Risk Management, forward curves, and/or volatility.
  • Required experience using technical tools: Scientific Programming (Matlab/Python/R/SAS), SQL databases, and MS Excel.
  • Possess well-rounded communication skills, including strong listening techniques, a clear and concise writing style, and effective verbal communication. Must be able to communicate across diverse internal and external groups.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work well in a team environment, emphasizing collaboration and adaptability to team needs.
  • Adept at managing multiple tasks and strictly adhering to deadlines, with the ability to adjust priorities throughout the day.
  • Must be a self-starter, capable of diligently pursuing tasks and managing priorities while working remotely with minimal direct supervision.
  • The ideal candidate will be comfortable developing quantitatively-derived forward curves in coordination with experts, and implementing them in a high-stakes, fail-safe environment with limited supervision.
