Job Description: State & Local Tax Intern

As a State & Local Tax Intern at Baker Tilly (BT), you will deliver tax advisory and compliance services to clients. What You Will Have the Opportunity To Do
- Gain hands-on experience in state and local taxation.
- Maintain and expand knowledge in the multi-state tax area by working on various projects, including conducting research and preparing memoranda on SALT issues (for individuals, corporations, and flow-through entities), assisting in M&A due diligence, voluntary disclosure programs, and compliance matters.
- Experience projects involving sales and use taxes, realty transfer taxes, income/franchise taxes, gross receipts taxes, real and personal property taxes, excise taxes, local-level taxes, and unclaimed property.
- Assist with addressing issues and questions for internal clients and potential prospects.
- Participate in our intern orientation, technical training, and development program designed to provide the tools needed to contribute to client engagements.
- Receive on-the-job training through real work engagements, showcasing how your academic experience translates to the professional environment.
- Learn directly from experienced associates, seniors, managers, and partners with specialized experience and technical knowledge across numerous industries and services.
- Build friendships and strong work relationships while gaining valuable experience.
- Demonstrate your performance and ability to join Baker Tilly as a full-time associate.
Qualifications
Education
- Currently enrolled or pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree program in Accounting or a related business discipline from an accredited institution. JD/LLM is preferred.
- Must have at least one academic term remaining following the completion of the internship.
Experience
No prior professional experience is required. Previous internship, academic, leadership, volunteer, customer service, or other relevant experience and demonstrated interest in accounting or professional services are preferred.
Certifications / Licensure
- On track to meet the educational requirements for CPA exam eligibility and/or Bar exam prior to the start of a full-time Associate position.
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer-sponsored visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- A resume and unofficial transcript(s) are required as part of the application process.
- Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
Knowledge & Technical Skills
- Foundational accounting knowledge developed through academic coursework is preferred.
- Ability to conduct basic research, analyze information, and document findings clearly and accurately.
- Openness to learning emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to responsibly support learning, efficiency, and problem-solving.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Pay rate ranges for this job position are listed below. Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of relevant factors including, but not limited to, applicant's skills, prior experience, qualifications, degrees, professional certifications, work arrangements, and geographic location. Baker Tilly offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package to eligible employees.
Pay Rate Ranges:
- In Seattle, WA: $28.75 to $96.60
- In California: $27.50 to $109.20
- In Denver, CO: $27.50 to $92.40
- In New York City: $31.25 to $105.00
- In Chicago, IL: $27.50 to $92.40
- In Tewksbury, MA: $28.75 to $96.60
- The national pay rate range is $25.00 to $84.00.
