If you enjoy solving problems, working with numbers and data to uncover insights, this could be the perfect way to spend your summer. Join Howden Re’s Actuarial Summer Internship Programme and discover how actuaries help businesses understand risk, make informed decisions, and prepare for an unpredictable future. You will gain experience in both insurance and reinsurance, working at the centre of mathematics, data analysis, and commercial strategy.

The 10-week programme is designed to provide meaningful exposure to actuarial science, while helping you develop technical knowledge, professional skills, and confidence to kick start your career.

It also offers a direct pathway into our Autumn 2028 graduate roles, subject to business needs and individual performance.

What you’ll be doing

You will begin with a structured induction before joining the Actuarial team to work alongside experienced specialists on real client projects. During the programme, you’ll:

• Analyse large datasets to uncover meaningful insights.
• Learn how (re)insurance works and how risk is priced, transferred, and managed.
• Support the development of actuarial models and simulations.
• Help prepare client-ready presentations and reports.
• Attend client meetings and gain exposure to the full actuarial lifecycle.
• Contribute to global business development projects, including Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

Who are we looking for?

No insurance experience is needed—we’ll teach you everything you need to know.

You’ll:

• Be in your penultimate year of study from a numerate degree background, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Economics, or a related discipline.
• Have achieved an A grade or above in A-level Mathematics or equivalent.
• Have a genuine interest in (re)insurance, actuarial science and risk.
• Enjoy analysing information and solving complex problems.
• Be able to communicate your ideas clearly and translate complex information for non-technical audiences.
• Be eager to learn, take initiative, and contribute to a team.
• Have programming experience that is beneficial but not essential (e.g., Python, R, VBA).

To be eligible for our programme, you must have the full and unrestricted right to work in the UK.

• Online application form – no CV required: We won’t ask you to submit a CV. Please upload a blank document on the application form.
• Online gamified assessment: Games designed to help us understand your natural strengths and how you approach different situations. There are no right or wrong answers. You can complete this stage on your phone or laptop.
• Pre-recorded video interview: Record your answers to a few questions using your phone or laptop, giving you the chance to tell us more about yourself in your own time in a relaxed setting.
• Assessment centre: An in-person final stage at one of our offices. You’ll take part in group activities and meet our team in a relaxed setting. The day is focused on getting to know you and seeing what it’s like to be part of Howden and experience our culture. We’ll cover all your travel costs for this day.
