Project Title

Exhaust Plume Detection and Reduction Through Mechanical Engineering Analysis

Project Description

This internship provides an opportunity to participate in an engineering study focused on the characterisation, detection, and mitigation of exhaust plumes within a semiconductor manufacturing environment. The project involves evaluating plume formation mechanisms, assessing potential detection methods, and investigating engineering approaches to reduce or eliminate visible plume conditions.

The intern will apply mechanical engineering principles, data analysis, and engineering evaluation techniques to support the study while gaining exposure to facilities systems, sustainability initiatives, and energy-efficiency opportunities.

Objective of the Project

  • Investigate factors that contribute to exhaust plume formation.
  • Evaluate suitable methods for plume detection and characterisation.
  • Assess engineering approaches for plume reduction or elimination.
  • Identify potential energy-efficiency opportunities associated with mechanical exhaust systems.

Project Scope

  • Conduct plume observations and collect engineering data relevant to the study.
  • Analyse potential plume sources and environmental or operating conditions that contribute to plume formation.
  • Apply thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics principles to evaluate plume behaviour and mitigation approaches.
  • Develop engineering analyses using tools such as Excel and prepare conceptual layouts or sketches using AutoCAD where applicable.
  • Where appropriate, utilise AI-enabled tools to support engineering analysis, documentation, and data interpretation.

Learning Opportunities

  • Gain practical exposure to facilities mechanical systems and industrial exhaust systems within a semiconductor manufacturing environment.
  • Apply mechanical engineering concepts including thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics to a real-world engineering challenge.
  • Develop experience in engineering data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Learn how engineering studies are used to evaluate technologies, improve system performance, and support decision-making.
  • Build technical communication skills through engineering documentation and project presentations.

Deliverables

  • Engineering study report summarising plume observations, findings, and analysis.
  • Evaluation of plume detection methods and their suitability for the application.
  • Assessment of engineering options for plume reduction or elimination.
  • Energy-efficiency opportunity assessment related to the study.
  • Final project presentation with recommendations and key findings.

Impact of the Project

  • Improve understanding of exhaust plume formation and contributing factors.
  • Identify technically feasible approaches for plume detection and mitigation.
  • Provide engineering insights that support future facilities system improvements.
  • Evaluate opportunities for improving mechanical system efficiency and sustainability performance.

Skillsets Required

  • Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, particularly thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Familiarity with Excel and AutoCAD is advantageous.
  • Effective communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools or AI-enabled workflows is advantageous.

Course of Interest

The ideal candidate should be pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Duration of Period

The ideal candidate should be able to commit to a full-time internship period of 5 months, from January to May 2027.

Opportunities for Full-Time Employment

Successful interns who demonstrate strong technical capability, learning agility, and effective collaboration may be considered for future internship or graduate employment opportunities, subject to business requirements.
