Location: UK Remote / Hybrid
Role Overview
The AXIS Renewable Energy Engineering team requires a highly motivated Engineering Intern to support a project identifying trends in damages and failures within onshore wind farms, solar PV, and battery storage (BESS) assets.
The role involves reviewing project information and root cause analyses from legacy insurance claims paid by AXIS, compiling key information in a database, and supporting underwriting decisions and industry insights.
This is an opportunity to learn about the core workings and failure modes of grid-scale renewable technologies across multiple countries and landscapes.
How This Role Contributes to Our Collective Success
The project outputs will directly inform business insights and decision-making within AXIS Global Energy. Engineering claim summaries and trend analysis will be used to support AXIS underwriters when evaluating future renewable energy projects, helping identify patterns in root causes and improve underwriting questions to reduce the likelihood of repeat losses.
The high-level outputs may also be used in AXIS thought leadership materials. The broader aim is to support best practice across the manufacturing, development, construction, and operations of renewable energy projects globally by learning from past experiences.
Responsibilities
- Read final loss adjuster reports and extract key technical and financial information.
- Enter relevant data into a central Excel database used by AXIS Global Energy.
- Review root cause analyses and expert investigations to determine types and causes of loss from a technical standpoint.
- Summarize claim information accurately, including expected costs related to physical damage and any business interruption.
- Process claims related to wind farms, solar PV, battery energy storage, large-scale hydro, and power-to-X systems such as green hydrogen.
- Perform regular quality control on existing database entries, as required.
- Support beta testing of an AI tool to lift key information from reports; may support further tool development depending on experience.
- Undertake additional duties and responsibilities appropriate to the role.
What You Need to Have
- Students working towards an MSc, MRes, or PhD are welcome to apply where their thesis is on a related renewable energy engineering topic.
- Core MS Excel skills, including:
- Basic formulas
- Mouse-free navigation
- Basic data analysis (filtering, sorting)
- Find and replace functionality
- Notes and commenting
- Experience using MS Outlook.
- Experience using generative AI assistants (e.g., MS Copilot), with an understanding of limitations and risks.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage a weekly workload.
- A critical eye for detail, as well as the ability to see the bigger picture (e.g., identifying broad errors or mismatched data).
- Willingness to ask questions when unclear.
- Confidence to self-teach and research new technologies and concepts.
- An interest in renewable energy technologies and consideration of a career in the energy sector.
