The most recently published cohort (2023) was 51 interns drawn from more than 40 universities; approximately 75% came through Oaktree's partner pipelines (see the differentiators card). Postings, including full-time "Associate" intakes such as the current 2026 Real Estate Associate role, appear on Oaktree's Workday portal. With three-quarters of seats routed through partner pipelines, a direct off-cycle applicant is competing for roughly a dozen seats across the global cohort; this is a focused-headcount employer at the intern level, not a volume one.

First, Oaktree is a founding partner of AltFinance, a $90 million ten-year initiative launched in June 2021 with Apollo and Ares to fund fellowships, scholarships and a Wharton-built virtual institute for students at Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Spelman; roughly 75% of Oaktree's 2023 intern class came through AltFinance and similar partners (Girls Who Invest, SEO, Phelps Forward, the Posse Foundation). Second, the platform is credit-led, with opportunistic and distressed debt as the firm's signature franchise, distinct from PE-led shops like Apollo or KKR. Third, since 2019 Oaktree has been majority-owned by Brookfield (62% per the transaction announcement), which broadens access to real estate and infrastructure deal flow while keeping the Oaktree hiring track separate. For a candidate weighing alternative-asset managers, the partner-pipeline structure is the decisive fact: an existing relationship with one of the partner organizations changes the realistic odds materially.
