Oaktree's summer internship program, launched in 2016, runs ten weeks across six global offices and places interns on both investment teams and non-investment functions including legal, compliance, finance, IT, client relations and corporate services. Three structural features set Oaktree apart from peers. First, Oaktree is a founding partner of AltFinance, a $90 million ten-year initiative launched in June 2021 with Apollo and Ares to fund fellowships, scholarships and a Wharton-built virtual institute for students at Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Spelman; roughly 75% of Oaktree's 2023 intern class came through AltFinance and similar partners (Girls Who Invest, SEO, Phelps Forward, the Posse Foundation). Second, the platform is credit-led, with opportunistic and distressed debt as the firm's signature franchise, distinct from PE-led shops like Apollo or KKR. Third, since 2019 Oaktree has been majority-owned by Brookfield (62% per the transaction announcement), which broadens access to real estate and infrastructure deal flow while keeping the Oaktree hiring track separate. For a candidate weighing alternative-asset managers, the partner-pipeline structure is the decisive fact: an existing relationship with one of the partner organizations changes the realistic odds materially.
