For the Anthropic Fellows Program, the firm describes the selection loop as an initial application and reference check, technical assessments and interviews, and a research discussion oriented around an empirical project. The technical CodeSignal stage is a single multi-level coding challenge rather than several short aptitude tests. The fully remote format does not consume the travel and on-site days other firms' loops still use, but the multi-level coding stage is closer in cost to a take-home block than to a 45-minute screen – the constraint to schedule against is a multi-hour focused block rather than a stack of short calls.

The structured early-career pathway is the Anthropic Fellows Program, a four-month full-time research fellowship with cohorts beginning in May and July 2026, a weekly stipend of USD 3,850 / GBP 2,310 / CAD 4,300, and a compute budget of around USD 15,000 per month, available across AI safety, AI security, ML systems and performance, reinforcement learning, and economics and policy tracks. Fellows work on an empirical project with the goal of producing a public output, typically a paper submission. A candidate looking for a conventional ten-week summer internship will not find one here; the Fellows Program is a different commitment – four months of full-time research – and is the only structured route in.

The Fellows Program does not: applicants "must have work authorization in the US, UK, or Canada and be located in that country during the program," and the firm states "we are not currently able to sponsor visas for fellows." The policy therefore splits sharply by track. For applicants without existing US, UK, or Canadian work authorisation, this is the gate that determines which of Anthropic's two doors is actually available: full-time roles may carry sponsorship, while the Fellows on-ramp is closed without local authorisation already in place.

The careers page states that "about half our technical staff had no prior ML experience" and "about half have PhDs," and the Fellows posting does not require a PhD or published papers; selection rests on technical fundamentals and ability to ship. The firm reports that over 40% of past Fellows have subsequently joined full-time. For a candidate from a quantitative but non-ML background, this concentrates the decision on a single full-time fellowship rather than a portfolio of summer internships – the Fellows track is both the on-ramp and the evaluation period.
