SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students, offering opportunities to work on teams, participate in significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas, and support a range of deals with clients.
Interns work on a variety of projects, including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings, to deepen their understanding of the global banking industry.
The Summer Intern Program is a pipeline to the full-time Analyst Program.

Desk Description
The role of Corporate Marketing & Communications (CM&C) is to promote the bank and amplify the SMBC brand while protecting its integrity and reputation. Within CM&C, the Brand Marketing and Events Team is responsible for the creation and implementation of brand marketing strategy, messaging, and all brand-related elements. The team also plans and executes client events and manages hospitality.
The Brand Marketing and Events intern will gain industry experience by working closely with the team on relevant projects, strengthening knowledge of building and maintaining brand presence and event planning fundamentals. In this role, you will be part of a collaborative team that strategically amplifies SMBC brand awareness and positioning, leveraging communications channels to promote SMBC capabilities, expertise, and culture.
You will also engage with and learn from SMBC business stakeholders, colleagues, and industry insiders to obtain real-world job experience.
Program Details
How the Program Works
The Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year. This 10-week program commences in June and includes:
- Orientation
- Training with on-the-desk experience
- Senior Speaker Series
- Japanese cultural activities
- Social networking activities
- Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
- Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC
Required Attributes
The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university, with a graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028
- Excellent academic record
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
- Ability to interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
- Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
- Intellectual curiosity
- Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-driven, and motivated
- Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills, with the ability to quickly learn new software applications
Work Model
SMBC employees participate in a hybrid workforce model, providing opportunities to work from home and from an SMBC office. SMBC requires employees to live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during the interview process. Hybrid work may not be permitted for certain roles, including certain FINRA-registered roles that require in-office attendance for the entire workweek.
