Role details

Key Responsibilities

Systems Architecture & Concept Development

  • Define and develop full-machine system architectures, including electronic, hydraulic, mechanical, and operator-interaction domains.
  • Lead functional decomposition and allocation of behaviours across ECUs, sensors, actuators, and subsystems.
  • Drive early-stage concept modelling and architecture selection using model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies.

Requirements Engineering & Traceability

  • Own end-to-end requirements flow-down using tools such as JAMA, from stakeholder needs to verified system-level functionality.
  • Define system-level requirements, interface specifications, and operational scenarios for machine features and safety-related functions.
  • Ensure robust requirements traceability across software, hardware, and mechanical domains.

Model‑Based Development & System Simulation

  • Develop system‑level behavioural models (plant and control interaction) to support concept evaluation, performance prediction, and system validation.
  • Use tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or SysML-based modelling environments for architecture modelling and behavioural definition.
  • Guide and review model‑based control software development, ensuring alignment with system intent.

System Integration, Test Strategy & Verification

  • Define system integration strategies using SIL, HIL, bench tests, and machine testing.
  • Lead system‑level issue diagnosis using CAN tools (e.g., CANalyzer, vehicle logging systems) and structured problem‑solving techniques.
  • Ensure alignment between virtual validation and physical machine behaviour across development phases.

Functional Safety & Compliance

  • Develop system safety concepts and functional safety architectures in accordance with standards such as ISO 13849, ISO 19014, or adjacent standards (ISO 25119, ISO 26262).
  • Support hazard analyses, DFMEAs, risk assessments, and safety case documentation.
  • Mentor teams in safety‑related design principles and validation practices.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide technical leadership across electrical, software, systems, hydraulic, and mechanical engineering teams.
  • Lead design reviews and drive multidisciplinary decision-making.
  • Promote best practices for systems engineering, MBSE adoption, development workflows, and architecture governance.
  • Coach and mentor engineers in requirements engineering, modelling, and systematic debugging.

Required Skills & Experience

Technical Expertise

  • Deep experience in systems engineering within off-highway, automotive, aerospace, industrial, robotics, or other complex mechatronic domains.
  • Strong proficiency in model-based development, using MATLAB/Simulink or SysML to define system behaviour and architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with requirements management tools such as JAMA and issue-tracking tools like JIRA.
  • Proficient with CAN tools (e.g., CANalyzer, CANoe) and logging/diagnostic workflows.
  • Strong understanding of ECU architectures, distributed control systems, sensors/actuators, powertrain systems, and safety features.

Domain Knowledge

  • Understanding of off-highway machinery such as hydraulics, propulsion, driveline, work functions, and operator control systems.
  • Appreciation of environmental and reliability challenges (vibration, thermal stress, contamination, EMC).

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical direction, influence designs, and align cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with a structured, systems-thinking mindset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, especially in ambiguous system-level issues.
  • Ability to mentor and uplift engineering teams in systems engineering best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering

Other Requirements

  • NA
