Graphcore is a British AI chip company headquartered in Bristol, founded in 2016 by Nigel Toon and Simon Knowles, who remain CEO and CTO. The firm designs the Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU), a novel processor architecture built for AI workloads as an alternative to GPUs. In July 2024 SoftBank acquired Graphcore for around $500 million; it operates as a wholly owned SoftBank subsidiary, with the founders retained and a stated collaboration on AGI-scale infrastructure.
