In Asia Pacific, ING offers wholesale banking across 11 markets: Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. ING provides both retail and wholesale banking services in Australia. The regional presence includes a 13% stake in Bank of Beijing, China, and a 25% stake in TMB in Thailand. Trading Risk Management (TRM) Internship

What does the TRM Team do at ING?

The Trading Risk Management (TRM) team safeguards the bank’s financial health by identifying, measuring, monitoring, and controlling exposure to market-driven risks. The department works across asset classes and business lines to ensure that trading (Financial Markets) and banking books remain within the bank’s risk appetite and regulatory boundaries.

What would you be doing?

Singapore is the regional hub for ING, including TRM activities. TRM oversees and supports both Financial Markets (FM) desks—such as Rates, FX, Credits, Commodities, and Non-Linear Trading—and Group Treasury (GT), which manages asset and liability management requirements, funding and liquidity needs, interest rate risks, and investment risks in the banking books. The internship will involve exposure to areas across either the FM or GT/ALM desk:

  • Gaining an understanding of the desk’s business and how the risk framework governs and controls its activities
  • Assisting with daily risk reporting and monitoring of key market risk metrics such as Value-at-Risk (VaR), sensitivities in trading books, or interest rate risk, liquidity risk, and FX exposures in banking books
  • Assisting with the preparation of management and regulatory reports covering trading risk or treasury/ALM risk
  • Tracking macroeconomic events and market movements that may impact risk positions
  • Supporting system and process enhancement initiatives
  • Assisting the team in specific risk analyses as required

What qualities, skills and other criteria are we looking for?

  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Quantitative Finance, or a related field
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with attention to detail
  • Demonstrates strong interest in understanding how banks manage financial risks
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient in Excel; VBA coding/programming knowledge is a plus

What would you gain from this internship?

Interns gain a broad understanding of how a bank’s Market Risk department is structured and operates. They will be exposed to all asset classes across Treasury and FM Trading, and will gain insight into the roles performed on these desks and potential future career options.
