Founded in 1939, Neuberger Berman is a private, independent, employee-owned investment manager. From offices in 39 cities worldwide, the firm manages $515 billion in client assets (as of March 31, 2025) across a range of strategies—including equity, fixed income, quantitative and multi-asset class, private equity and hedge funds—on behalf of institutions, advisors and individual investors globally.
Position Overview
NB Alternatives manages approximately $168 billion for institutional and high net worth clients across a range of commingled fund of funds and customized portfolios.
This Operational Due Diligence team member will play an integral role in overseeing and maintaining the Alternatives Operational Due Diligence program and directly impacting overall investment decisions. The role involves a high level of direct interaction with senior personnel on both the investment and non-investment teams of the firm. The primary responsibility is to conduct operational due diligence reviews on existing and prospective investments managed with third-party alternative fund managers (e.g., hedge funds, private equity, venture capital) and specialty lenders. The candidate should identify operational risks based on key investment characteristics (e.g., strategy, firm/team, product offering) and assess the operating infrastructure in place to mitigate these risks. Reviews focus on firm/fund structuring, trading, valuation, portfolio accounting and fund administration, counterparty risk, technology, and compliance. The candidate should be comfortable participating in meetings with C-level executives and document findings succinctly. The role requires ownership of the broader ODD review process for a roster of over 300 alternative fund managers and specialty lenders across various strategies, ensuring timely and ongoing reviews as necessary.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain ownership of the full ODD review lifecycle for both existing and prospective investments
- Gather and analyze information from fund managers and specialty lenders during the investment decision-making process via meetings with senior members of non-investment teams (e.g., COO, CFO, GC/CCO, CTO)
- Identify key areas of operational risk and ensure appropriate mitigating controls are implemented
- Communicate due diligence findings to the Investment Team and other decision makers as necessary
- Document and track the operational due diligence review process via a proprietary ODD memo
- Build out and manage a proprietary data set used in ODD analysis and monitoring
- Conduct ongoing service provider due diligence
- Stay informed of industry best practices and events across regulatory, technology/systems, and trading areas while owning projects analyzing key portfolio risks
- Communicate with clients on an as-needed basis
- Engage in ad hoc operational projects to support the broader Alternatives platform
Experience & Skills Qualifications
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience; traditional audit/tax, advisory, or operational due diligence experience is strongly preferred, but comparable fund accounting, trading, fund administration, or hedge/PE fund operations experience will be considered
- Familiarity with private equity, venture capital, private credit, and various hedge fund strategies (e.g., distressed credit, global macro, systematic)
- Superior oral communication skills; comfortable participating in meetings with C-level professionals and engaging with investors; strong written communication for internal documentation
- Strong attention to detail; ability to synthesize information from multiple sources and reconcile conflicts
- Ability to independently formulate and support opinions
- Ability to support ongoing reviews and lead ad hoc projects while meeting internal deadlines; proficient at multi-tasking and prioritization
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Experience with Tableau and/or PowerBI is a plus
- CPA, CAIA or CFA a plus
