## Overview

A member of the Commercial Credit team that partners with senior team members supporting the duties of underwriting and the ongoing monitoring of a portfolio of credit relationships. Responsible for performing supporting analysis, identifying risk issues, and completing sections of credit analysis as needed to assess the creditworthiness of commercial clients.

## Primary Responsibilities

  
- Facilitate customer credit needs by analyzing new requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan, including recommending adding or removing conditions.
  
- Manage ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring (CCM) activities to identify emerging credit risk in a timely manner and support actions to manage risk, minimize losses, and assign an accurate risk rating. CCM includes, but is not limited to, annual reviews, interim update memos, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other credit surveillance.
  
- Review pertinent credit and financial information, including financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureau information, appraisals, internal credit information, industry research, and peer data; determine the need for additional information or deeper investigation.
  
- Analyze financial information and related materials and complete credit analyses for the Bank’s commercial transactions. Written analyses include an independent credit quality assessment with a well-supported risk rating; identification and description of credit risks and mitigants; and consideration of industry concerns, market trends, financial trends, and other relevant credit issues.
  
- Make appropriate structure recommendations by analyzing and evaluating scenarios, including the company’s case, the bank’s base case, and a downside case.
  
- Identify suspicious activity and activity that may be contrary to the customer’s interests as part of managing ongoing portfolio risk.
  
- Partner proactively with relationship managers (RMs) throughout the credit process—from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan—to maintain timely and accurate risk ratings for a portfolio of commercial credits.
  
- Spread financial statements and prepare financial/projection models designed to sensitize conditions impacting the proposed transaction, including cash flow, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, and guarantor statement analysis as appropriate.
  
- Enter complete and accurate data into Bank systems to support underwriting and portfolio management activities.
  
- Attend client/prospect calls with RMs to understand the client/prospect and their business, enabling effective analysis and underwriting; based on underwriting parameters, recommend a risk rating.
  
- Present analysis and address questions during credit request discussions or committee presentations.
  
- Assist in monitoring credit policy compliance by verifying adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy and commenting on risks associated with non-compliance.
  
- Understand and adhere to applicable compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with company or regulatory standards and policies.
  
- Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points and issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  
- Complete other duties as assigned.

## Scope of Responsibilities

Commercial Credit is responsible for the credit delivery of the Bank’s commercial clients throughout the credit lifecycle. Credit assessments range from initial analyses of new relationships to material modifications or restructurings of long-term relationships, as well as ongoing monitoring through the life of the loan. Commercial Credit also ensures accurate completion of the Bank’s risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads. The work completed supports credit decisions for new, renewed, or amended credit transactions.

Contacts are primarily internal, including credit officers and other bank personnel. The position interacts with commercial banking relationship managers across the bank’s footprint and industry verticals. Customer interaction is expected. The role works independently under general supervision.

## Education and Experience Required

  
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field, and a minimum of one year of work experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or other financial analysis.
  
- In lieu of a degree: a combined minimum of 5 years of higher education and/or work experience, including one year of work experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or other financial analysis.
  
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  
- Strong analytical ability.
  
- Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  
- Attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
  
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  
- Customer focused with strong interpersonal skills.
  
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

## Education and Experience Preferred

  
- Experience with Capital IQ, FactSet, and Bloomberg.
  
- Experience with nCino.
  
- Experience with Affordable Housing underwriting.
