SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students. Interns will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas, and support a range of deals with clients.

Participants will work on a variety of projects, including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings—supporting their understanding of the global banking industry.

The Summer Intern Program is a pipeline to SMBC’s full-time Analyst Program.

## Desk Description

SMBC is seeking Summer Interns to join the Global Markets COO / Business Management team in the Americas. The team partners closely with Sales & Trading management and works across Front Office, Risk, Finance, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Technology to support the strategic and day-to-day management of the Global Markets business.

Interns will gain exposure to the operational, financial, and strategic aspects of running a global markets franchise. Through project-based work and business initiatives, interns will develop an understanding of how a trading business is managed, measured, controlled, and scaled, while supporting senior business leaders in driving key priorities.

### Responsibilities

  
- Assist with business performance analysis, management reporting, and KPI development
  
- Support strategic initiatives that enhance business growth, efficiency, and client service
  
- Conduct analysis on revenues, expenses, client activity, and market trends
  
- Help coordinate regulatory, governance, and risk management initiatives across multiple stakeholders
  
- Support business planning, organizational, and process improvement projects
  
- Prepare senior management presentations, business reviews, and executive materials
  
- Collaborate with teams across Sales, Trading, Risk, Finance, Operations, Compliance, and Technology

This internship is ideal for students interested in understanding how a global financial markets business operates beyond the trading desk, and how strategic decisions are executed across a large financial institution.

### Potential Exposure Areas

  
- **Business Management & Strategy:** Supports management and execution of strategic initiatives across Global Markets, including monitoring performance, allocating resources, improving processes, and driving business priorities.
  
- **Financial & Performance Management:** Partners with Sales & Trading leadership to analyze revenues, expenses, client activity, and business trends, and to develop management reporting and insights for decision-making and business planning.
  
- **Business Execution & Governance:** Coordinates key governance, regulatory, risk, and control initiatives across the Global Markets platform and partners with stakeholders to ensure delivery of strategic programs and business priorities.
  
- **Cross-Functional Project Management:** Works with Front Office, Risk, Finance, Operations, Compliance, and Technology teams to implement business enhancements, process improvements, new products, and infrastructure initiatives that support business growth and operational efficiency.

## How Our Program Works

The Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year. This 10-week program commences in June and includes:

- Senior Speaker Series
  
- Japanese cultural activities
  
- Social networking activities
  
- Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  
- Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

## Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:

  
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028; excellent academic record
  
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
  
- Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  
- Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  
- Intellectual curiosity
  
- Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
  
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-driven, and motivated
  
- Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills, with the ability to quickly learn new software applications

## Work Model

SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model, providing opportunities to work from home and from an SMBC office. SMBC requires employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during the interview process. Hybrid work may not be permitted for certain roles, including certain FINRA-registered roles that require in-office attendance for the entire workweek.
