## Overview

Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally recognized scientists and engineers who pursue innovation across computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

The Economics and Computation group has multiple Research Intern positions for the summer of 2026. Research areas include market design, the economics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), economics and computation, social learning, applied microeconomics, microeconomic theory, and behavioral economics. Locations include Microsoft Research New England, Microsoft Research New York City, and Microsoft Research Redmond.

The Economics and Computation group includes researchers and postdocs at MSR NE and MSR NYC who collaborate with each other and incoming interns. This and related internship postings can be found on the Economics and Computation website. Candidates are encouraged to apply to multiple postings.

Microsoft Research New England and Microsoft Research New York City are comprised of approximately fifty full-time researchers and postdocs working in AI for systems, biomedical machine learning, computational social science, economics and computation, FATE, machine learning and AI, machine learning and statistics, reinforcement learning, and sociotechnical systems. The labs are highly collaborative and interdisciplinary and are actively engaged with the local academic and tech communities.

## Responsibilities

Research Interns apply inquiry and theory to practical work. Working alongside doctoral candidates and leading researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. They contribute to ongoing research and development while advancing their own careers. During the 12-week internship, interns are paired with mentors, collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and participate in the vibrant research community. Internships are available in all research areas and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

## Qualifications

### Required Qualifications

  
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Economics, or a related field.

### Other Requirements

  
- Interns are expected to be physically located at their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of the internship.
  
- In addition to the qualifications above, you must submit a minimum of two reference letters, a cover letter, and any relevant work or research samples. After you submit your application, a request for letters may be sent to your references. Reference letters may not be requested for all candidates automatically. You may wish to inform your letter writers in advance.

- Demonstrated ability to conduct original research.

## Compensation & Benefits

The base pay range for this internship is USD 6,710 to USD 13,270 per month. A different range applies to specific locations (San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area), with a base pay range of USD 8,760 to USD 14,360 per month in those locations.
