Old Mutual runs four early-career tracks side by side, spanning school-leaver to postgraduate level, set out on its student and graduate opportunities hub:

• Amathuba Learnership: a 12-month, in-house programme for matriculants with no completed degree or prior work experience, leading to an FSP-recognised NQF Level 4 Wealth Management qualification
• Accounting and Actuarial Bursaries: fund university study for prospective chartered accountants and actuaries
• Graduate Programme: rotational and direct-entry roles for graduates across the business
• TechTalent Incubator: a technology-focused track within the graduate intake

A candidate still at school and one finishing an actuarial degree are choosing between different tracks on the same page, not competing for the same seats, so matching your own stage of study to the right track comes before preparing an application, not after.

Two of Old Mutual's main entry-level routes carry explicit citizenship requirements: the Amathuba Learnership requires applicants to be "a South African citizen aged between 18-28," and the Accounting and Actuarial Bursaries state that "the bursary is for South African citizens." Neither page describes a visa or work-permit route for non-citizens, and Old Mutual's Graduate Programme and TechTalent Incubator pages are silent on nationality. For an international candidate, the Amathuba and Bursary routes are effectively closed rather than narrowed, leaving individual Graduate Programme vacancy postings, where requirements are set per role, as the more realistic starting point to check first.

Old Mutual traces its origin to 1845, when Scotsman John Fairbairn founded The Mutual Life Assurance Society of the Cape of Good Hope in Cape Town with no capital beyond the premiums of its first 166 policyholders; the company demutualised and listed in 1999. Its Amathuba Learnership admits matriculants with no completed or in-progress degree and no prior work experience, a materially lower entry bar than the graduate-only intake most peers run, and carries them to a recognised qualification over 12 months. Alongside it, Old Mutual runs bursary, graduate, and technology-specific tracks as separate, parallel routes rather than one graduate-only intake. For a candidate without a completed degree, that makes Old Mutual one of the few large financial employers in this market with a genuine paid route in, worth knowing before ruling the firm out for lack of a degree.
