In October 2025, IonQ reported a 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, the first quantum computing company to publish a result past the "four-nines" threshold, alongside a stated 256-qubit system demonstration for 2026 and a roadmap to 2 million qubits by 2030. Three other facts set it apart from most quantum computing employers:

• The largest publicly-traded pure-play trapped-ion quantum computing company, trading on the NYSE as IONQ since October 2021 after a SPAC merger with dMY Technology Group III
• Founded in 2015 on trapped-ion research from Chris Monroe's University of Maryland lab and Jungsang Kim's Duke University lab
